Introduction[]

Early known written accounts of medicinal botany can be traced back to about 8,000 years ago. Some ancient Kaldorei archeological artefacts discovered near Mount Hyjal were lists of botanical remedies. The Kaldorei emphasized the role of priestesses in divine cures involving medicinal herbs. The practice of herbal medicine appeared to have been the responsibility of scholars and priestesses of Elune who left behind magically preserved scrolls recording numerous medicinal plants including the common silverleaf and peacebloom.

The ancient trolls of Arathi also had a long tradition of herbal medicine. Dwarven archeology expeditions uncovered clay tablets dating back approximately 2,800 years, which were deciphered as medicinal remedies. The tablets mention familiar plants such as goldthorn, liferoot and fadeleaf. Some of these tablets can be viewed in the collection of artefacts on display in the Hall of Explorers in Ironforge.

In the human tradition of herbalism, we can observe a reliance on herbal medicine, early on during the time of the Seven Kingdoms, especially in the Kingdom of Arathor. The lush rolling hills of the Arathi Highlands provided a diverse and abundant flora and were the primary herb gathering grounds of Gerard Bancke, the father of modern herbalism in the human territories. His ground-breaking works, “A General History of Plants[1] and “Mystic Herbal<[2] have been transcribed and re-printed many times over the centuries and are still essential reference texts for herbalists today.

This herbal will endeavor to build on these texts and augment them with current knowledge. Entries will be listed by region in alphabetical order of common name. The naming convention for the plants will follow the classic nomenclature developed by Linnus Carlaeus in “The Species of Plants”[3].

Alchemical uses of the plants in the magical enhancement of attributes, skills and spellcasting abilities are not covered in this herbal.

Eastern Kingdom and Kalimdor[]

The flora of the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor is the most widely used in herbal remedies. The plants inventoried have a long medicinal history and have been used for centuries. Their curative properties have been tried and verified and many are essential elements of the competent herbalist’s basic healing ingredients.  Many combine well with each other to create potent remedies.

Arthas’ Tears[]

Scientific name:  Borago officinalis
Family:  Boraginaceae

'
Habitat: Arthas' tears can be found in the Western Plaguelands, the Eastern Plaguelands, and Felwood

Properties and Uses: This purple flower once grew densely near the city of Strathholme. Although they survived the Culling and the plague-born corruption of the land, the climate changes of the Sundering killed most of them. A few still linger, in remote corners of the world, but it seems that this plant will soon be only a memory. They are best known for their great beauty, but their main alchemical use is for a draught that allows the user to sense the closeness of undead. The irony of this has not gone unheeded.

Azshara’s Veil[]

Scientific Name: Andrographis paniculata
Family: Acanthaceae

Habitat: This herb can be found in Shimmering Expanse, the Tol Barad Peninsula, the Abyssal Depths, Kelp'thar Forest and Mount Hyjal.

Properties and Uses: Easily one of the more common seaweeds, this plant is found along coastal regions from southwestern Kalimdor to the Tol Barad Peninsula. However it is most famous for the warm seas of Vashj'ir, where it grows in thick kelp forests and can reach hundreds of feet in length. Azshara's Veil is named for its beauty, as homage to the legendary beauty of its namesake, the Highborne Queen. Azshara's Veil produces tiny air bubbles that, when released, become entwined among its muted-green, delicate, ribbon-like fronds, seemingly adorning the plant like tiny jewels. Azshara's Veil can prove difficult to harvest. The younger, smaller plants and those growing in coastal regions are significantly easier and safer to harvest, and the fresh, young fronds are much easier to work with. Azshara's Veil is used to produce a very potent tonic. It is good for the mind, encouraging memory and learning and has proven effective at combating senility. It promotes energy and alertness and provides a sense of clarity. It may be taken to increase attention span, focus, and deter tiredness.

 Black Lotus[]

Scientific name: Nelumbo nucifera L.
Family: Nymphaeaceae

Habitat: The black lotus is rare and can be found in Winterspring, Eastern Plaguelands, Burning Steppes, Silithus, and Blasted Lands.

Properties and Uses: Black Lotus has been described as a rather striking flower, for it is nearly black in color. It is also exceptionally rare. For most of its life cycle it is little more than a thorny stalk, and may bloom only a handful of times over the course of its perennial lifespan. The Black Lotus has been used traditionally as an ominous symbol of impending disaster, and is often associated with treachery, poison, and murder, and for very good reasons. When ingested, it floods the body with a deadly neurotoxin.

Black Lotus used to be fairly prolific, but due to overharvesting and its relatively sluggish growth cycle, supply simply has not kept up with demand. A skilled alchemist can make use of the stamens, pollen, petals, and seeds by distillation and separating the venomous toxin, which should be promptly disposed of. Black Lotus extract promotes strong vitality, clarity of mind, mental sharpness, and focus. Alone the extract is little more than an expensive mood enhancer, but when properly processed, its effects can be increased dramatically.

Black Lotus is primarily used in alchemical concoctions that ward against magic, clarify the mind, and in anabolic agents. Medicinally it is typically only used in the most severe of situations, such as cases involving magically induced curses, poisons, and diseases that do not respond readily to more traditional treatment.

Blindweed[]

Scientific Name: Coix lacryma-jobi L.
Family: Gramineae
Habitat: Blindweed can be found near stagnant water, mostly in Swamp of Sorrows , the Verdantis River region, and in limited amounts in Un'Goro Crater, and Zangamarsh.

Properties and Uses: This is a leafy plant with incised foliage. Its flowers come in shades of blue, pink, or purple, often in a single plant. The flowers have seven petals and a bright yellow center. The foliage is lush green and covered in fine hairs. Blindweed grows rampant in warm, damp, marshy areas, particularly in loose, gravelly or sandy beds. It is easy to cultivate at home and a popular garden fixture. The juice from its bulbous, garlic-like root has strong magic-amplifying and conducting properties. The stem and leaves can be juiced, dried, or ground, and are an effective remedy for nosebleeds. The flower buds may be dried and ground into a fine powder and applied externally to wounds.

This plant is effective to treat ailments of the respiratory organs. It is sometimes made into syrup and given for pulmonary illnesses.  The root of the plant is used in a number of invigorating, refreshing, and soothing potions.

Bloodthistle[]

Scientific Name: Papaver somniferum L.
Family: Papaveracea

Habitat: Bloodthistle grows in Eversong Forest in Quel’Thalas. It is very difficult to obtain and is considered an illegal substance in many parts of Azeroth.

Properties and Uses: Bloodthistle has bright green leaves with a soft, flexible spine at the tip and a bright red flower, the color of blood. It only grows in the kingdom of Quel'thalas, and its growth patterns correlate with the magical ebb and flow that permeates the land. The recent scourge taint on the land appears to have introduced some side effects to the plant's medicinal properties. Bloodthistle requires magical energy in order to grow and thus is impractical to cultivate at home. Due to the difficulty in obtaining this herb most herbalists will turn to equally effective alternatives. The Sin'dorei specifically, seems to be susceptible to Bloodthistle addiction. This sensitivity is perhaps related to the plant's magical properties. It has been used among the Sin'dorei population as a means to control mana dependency.

Bloodthistle is antiseptic and dilutions act as topical sanitizers for minor injuries. Bloodthistle can be addictive to the magically-inclined. Common side effects can range from mild withdrawal effects to the more severe, including fatigue, sweats, heart palpitation, insomnia, anxiety, agitation,  and/or depression.

Briarthorn[]

Scientific Name: Zingiber officinale Rosc.
Family:  Zingiberaceae
Habitat: Briathorn grows in abundance in many regions of Azeroth including The Barrens , Silverpine Forest,  Duskwood, Hillsbrad Foothills, Westfall, Stonetalon Mountains ,  the Wetlands , Darkshore , Redrige Mountains , Loch Modan, Ashenvale  and the  Ghostlands .

Properties and Uses:  Briarthorn is a shrub that grows in densely knotted, thorn-covered vines with a thick, woody outer coating. It prefers shady, dark areas, and has no leaves. In the center of the vine is a gooey sap that has potent medicinal properties. According to legend, briarthorn grows in the places where the Ancient Agamaggan's blood was spilled ten thousand years ago, during the War of the Ancients. Appropriate protective equipment should be worn prior to harvesting as the spines are extremely sharp.

This herb; much like swift thistle, works as both a healing agent and an as a scarring agent used commonly to speed up closing of open wounds. It is often used as a coating for sutures.  It can increase the effectiveness of healing potions and salves.

Bruiseweed[]

Scientific Name: Imperata cylindrical L
Family: Gramineae

Habitat: Bruiseweed can be found in Northern Stranglethorn, the Wetlands, Redrige Mountains, Ashenvale, Duskwood, Westfall, The Hinterlands, Hillsbrad Foothills, Stonetalon Mountains, Loch Modan, Ghoslands, Arathi Highlands, and the Bloodmyst Isle.

Properties and Uses: Most commonly found near structures or hillsides, Bruiseweed is a tall thistle plant with flowers that range from pale blue to faded purple. It grows best in partial shade. The plant owes its name to its flowers which release a special pigment  that, when touched or rubbed on the skin, leaves a purplish, bluish stain that bears an uncanny resemblance to a bruise. The plant has been used for centuries by herbalists as an effective nerve tonic and sedative. Its common uses include relief of nervous tension, anxiety and nerve pain. Tinctures made from the fresh herb are the optimal choice. Teas should be drunk hot with either young peacebloom blossom or sprinkling of dried stranglekelp.

Combined with Briarthorn it produces an effective pain reliever and regenerative stimulant. It is also used in the composition of certain anti-venoms.

Cinderbloom[]

Scientific Name: Ixora chinensis Lam
Family: Rubiaceae

Habitat: Cinderbloom is commonly found in the Tol Barad Peninsula, Deepholm, Uldum and Mount Hyjal.

Properties and uses: This particular variety of orchid is aptly named due both to its warm, bioluminescent glow and the incredibly spicy flavor its oil adds to the numerous concoctions for which it is famous. The plant consists of a low, dense, leafy bush with delicate tendrils that can grow to six or seven inches.  As these tendrils grow, they straighten into long, sturdy stalks atop which sprout the flowers. The flowers consist of two large, elongated petals that bloom from the lower half of the bud, spreading out just enough to gently cradle the stamens. Cinderbloom ranges in color from golden yellow to a fiery orange-red. Once harvested as the plant begins to wilt the glow fades and disappears.

While Cinderbloom has very specific growing needs and is thus difficult to cultivate, it is nonetheless fast-growing and available in abundant supply.  Cinderbloom is a potent tonic, adaptogen, and alterative. It may be used to calm the nerves, bring mental clarity, boost resistance to disease and magic, and promotes healing and good health. It may be taken as a gentle treatment for anxiety or nervousness, and promotes focus and memory.

Dragon's Teeth

Scientific Name: Daphne D. mezereum
Family: Thymelaeceae

Habitat :Dragon’s Teeth can only be found in the Badlands

Properties and Uses: Dragon’s Teeth only grows in a specific region called the Worldbreaker’s Scar, in the Badlands. This valley was carved by Deathwing during his initial assault upon Azeroth, and these strange, white and red plants sprung up in his wake. Dragon's Teeth is easily identified as pale, greyish white incised leaves that turn reddish at the tips and along the edges. It grows in small clumps. The oil coating the leaves is oddly cool to the touch. An interesting chemical reaction between powdered Goldthorn bark and Dragon's Teeth Oil produces a warming, soothing effect. By contrast Dragon's Tooth oil combined with the catalyst Khadgar's Whisker provides a very viable alternative to frost oils and elixirs derived from Wintersbite.

Fadeleaf[]

Scientific Name: Euphrasia officinalis L.
Family: Scrophulariaceae

Habitat: Look for fadeleaf in Arathi Highlands, Stranglethorn Vale, Swamp of Sorrows or Dustwallow Marsh.

Properties and Uses: Fadeleaf is a small evergreen shrub. It is most easily found in shaded areas. It is covered in oil that can causes skin rashes and temporary blindness if it comes in contact with the eyes. Always wear leather gloves if you are harvesting fadeleaf, and take care not to touch the gloves with bare skin. Both wild and domesticated varieties of Fadeleaf share similar medicinal benefits.

Fadeleaf's is used in herbal medicine to treat weaknesses in the retina that cause shortness of vision. Fadeleaf is also used in the treatment of conjunctivitis. The anti-inflammatory and antibacterial compounds in the herb significantly speed up the healing process. Fadeleaf is often combined with catalyst agents like Mountain silversage to relieve common allergy symptoms such as itchy, watery eyes.

Goldthorn and Khadgar's Whisker significantly boost the effects of fadeleaf, and a concentrated elixir can improve even the best vision.

Felweed

Scientific Name: Aristolochia Daemonica

Family: Compositae

Habitat: Felweed is found growing in Demonic infested regions only. It is common in Outland, but has been observed growing in Felwood, Winterspring and the Blasted Lands.

Properties and uses: Felweed is a mutated variant of common Fern species native to Azeroth and Draenor. The corruption of nearby Fel presence has irreversibly transformed this benign species into an infesting weed that will kill the neighboring plants. Because of this vampiric effect, however, Felweed can yield significant quantities of energy when harvested, and is a known reagent in health and mana tonics and potions when purified.

The absorbed Fel energy in Felweed is not easily removed. Chewing it has the effect of releasing this Fel energy into the imbider. This creates a state of dulled senses, slowed reaction time and will lead to an addiction in a very short time. When smoked, Felweed when inhaled becomes very dangerous, as the smoke inhaled will become poisionous in a very short time, making Felweed users put their own lives at risk. It is declared Illegal for public sale or consumption by the Kirin Tor.

Firebloom[]

Scientific Name:Arum maculate
Family: Araceae

Habitat: Firebloom can be found in warmer regions, most frequently Tanaris and the Searing Gorge, but also in the Blasted Lands and the Badlands. In the Searing Gorge it is found in the greatest quantity near lava flows.

Properties and Uses: This variety of lily flourishes in hot, arid terrain. It is bright red and orange in color with spindly, delicate stamens. Firebloom is extremely spicy; in small amounts it can be used as a seasoning. The pollen and nectar of Firebloom will burn the skin when touched.  It is recommended to wear gloves while gathering this herb. It may prove difficult to harvest, as the root runs very deep into the ground to find whatever water it can.

Potions made with Firebloom tend to be rather spicy. The oil may be extracted from the plant for alchemical purposes, and the leftover plant processed and added to red dye, which adds a lustrous shimmer to textiles. Firebloom oil is a key ingredient in rocket fuel. An infusion of Oil of Blackmouth and Firebloom stamens can enhance the ability to focus.

Ghost Mushroom

Scientific Name: Psilocybe semilanceata
Family: Strophariacaea

Habitat: Ghost Mushrooms can be found only in The Hinterlands. In Outland they can be found in Zangarmarsh. They grow exclusively underground, in caves.

Properties and Uses:  The Ghost Mushroom owes its name to its pale, almost transparent coloration and bioluminescent glow. It originated in the Zangarmarsh region of Outland, but spores were brought over in the First War. These mushrooms can only be found in caves, as they cannot tolerate sunlight. The infamous ghost mushroom contains a powerful hallucinogenic psychoactive compound. A twelve hour hallucinatory event can be triggered by as few as five of these small slender mushrooms. Grave Moss
[]

''Scientific Name: Podophyllum peltatum
Family:  ''
Berberidaceae

Habitat: Grave Moss can be found around gravesites in places such as the Kodo Graveyard in Desolace, Ironbeard's Tomb in the Wetlands, Scarlet Monastery graveyard in Tirisfal Glades, and the Raven Hill graveyard in Duskwood.

Properties and Use: This bright green moss grows in nitrate-rich environments and thrives on decaying organic matter. The plant actually feeds on necromantic energies which, if left to float freely around, could very well encourage the dead to rise. It is easily recognizable as a bright green velvety sheet of fine creep moss. It is a potentially disgusting plant to harvest and disturbing the dead can be outright dangerous, but the rewards are well worth it.

Grave Moss is a strong gland stimulant. It was once used to treat skin problems, and infections. It is most often combined with other herbs (Bloodthistle, Nightmare Vine, or Ghost Mushroom).  It is powerful and toxic, and should be used with extreme caution in very small dosages. Do not use this herb without the proper guidance from a skilled alchemist! Grave Moss possesses residual dark elemental properties from its reliance on necromantic energy for growth and its proximity to death and decay. Distilled essence of the moss can be used to enhance one's awareness of shadowy magic.

It isn't particularly edible.

It's easy to dismiss this weed as it has no medicinal or magical properties specifically of its own. However, oils from the roots, stems, and blades are very effective in boosting the potency of many other alchemical compounds. The oil from the grass blades also proves an effective insect repellant.

Khadgar's Whisker is typically pressed and the oil reserved. The remains of the plant may be discarded or fed to livestock.

Liferoot is nutritious, good to eat and neutralizes toxins. Dried and powdered, it can be applied directly to a wound. It is a fairly common dietary staple and is known to boost the body's ability to expel toxins. A potion derived from Liferoot and Stranglekelp is often included in meals at high profile gatherings in which fear of poison is a very real threat. The effects of instant poisons that act by triggering respiratory distress and asphyxiation can be weakened or negated with Liferoot.

For medicinal purposes Liferoot is best combined with other adaptogens, like Peacebloom, Silverleaf, Earthroot, Mageroyal, or Arthas' Tears, to increase its effectiveness. The dried root is often brewed into tea, or made into tinctures. In traditional folk medicine, liferoot is used to combat sleeplessness and induce pleasant and soothing dreams. The magically inclined have relied on Mageroyal to aid in spellcasting and rejuvenation of mana reserves, as the plant provides a safer alternative to the use of Bloodthistle for a similar purpose. The roots contain the highest concentration of arcane properties, which are obtained by pressing the stems for juice. The pressed roots can be dried and further processed.

An essential oil derived from Mageroyal flowers is used to treat stomach and nervous problems, as well as headaches. Mageroyal may also be applied externally as a spirit in hair-lotions, for its aroma and also to stimulate hair growth and prevent premature baldness. An infusion of the dried plant (both leaves and flowers) used when cold, makes one of the best hair washes known. It forms an effective treatment to reduce dandruff.  The stimulant effect of Swiftthistle increases the potency of potions and tinctures derived from Mageroyal. Mageroyal boosts the resistance-enhancing properties of Wild Steelbloom.

Scientific Name: Viscum album
Family: Santalaceae

Habitat: Plaguebloom grows in the Eastern and Western Plaguelands and Felwood

Properties and Uses:  The bark or skin of the plaguebloom's tough stem can be processed into a cardiac tonic, that,  in miniscule doses, can safely be used in the treatment of heart disease. The plant is stated to possess hypotensive, cardiac-depressant and sedative properties. It should be collected and administered with great care, however. The sap of the plant is highly irritating, and much of the herb is highly toxic.

Plaguebloom is hated by farmers for causing colic in horses and fatal bloating in sheep and cattle. Few herbalists are willing to collect such a potentially deadly herb, but for one who has studied the nature of the plant and its applications in great depth, the risk may be worthwhile.

Purple Lotus[]

Scientific Name: Nymphaea caerulea'
Family:
Nymphaeaceae

'Habitat: 'Purple Lotus can typically be found around ruins in Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms.

Properties and Uses: Easily the most common variety of lotus, recognizable by its distinct purple, fleshy pod, and dark spines. Purple Lotus may be accompanied by the ropy filaments of its usual symbiotic companion, Wildvine. The flower is easily identified by delicate, purple petals and a fragrant, yellow center. These plants often grow around the ruins of ancient troll or Kal'dorei settlements, as both races have historically cultivated them for medicinal and spiritual purposes.

Purple lotus is said to bring visions and sleep, and can indeed be used in alchemy to either encourage a waking dream, or a dreamless, peaceful sleep. The essence of this purple-blue flower is used to stimulate circulation and enhance sexual vigour; it promotes feelings of euphoria and warmth when prepared as a tea, which is thick and golden, or smoked as dried petals. An extract, consumed as a  few drops daily, is thought to be a general tonic for good health, and pressed  purple lotus oil is also use to make delightful perfumes.

Stranglekelp[]

Scientific Name: Lobelia inflata
Family: Campanulaceae

Habitat:  Stranglekelp can be found  in  the Wetlands, Stranglethorn Vale, the Barrens, Ashenvale, Westfall, Darkshore, Desolace, Hillsbrad Foothills, Feralas, the Hinterlands, the Swamp of Sorrows, Silverpine Forest, Tanaris, Dustwallow Marsh, Alterac Mountains and Bloodmyst Isle

Properties and Uses:  One of the more dangerous plants on Azeroth, Stranglekelp is green kelp that grows underwater along most coastlines in shallow waters. Its distinctive flowers do not bloom. Stranglekelp gets its name from two sources--its prevalence around Stranglethorn Vale, and its tendency to ensnare and drown wildlife. Great care should be taken to avoid tangling oneself. Stranglekelp leaves are considered a delicacy in some coastal regions, although its strong, earthy, green flavor is something of an acquired taste. Its vines are also sometimes dried and used as ropes.

Stranglekelp is considered one of the best herbs for treating respiratory conditions such as asthma and bronchitis. It combats fever and improves circulation and reduces inflammation, making it a popular remedy for arthritis and other joint maladies. The plant can be smoked for its respiratory benefits, or chewed to induce vomiting in cases where poison has been ingested. It is burned to produce a smoke that wards off some insects.  Combining Stranglekelp with Oil of Blackmouth can slow breathing significantly with little to no side effect, and concentrated mixtures can render one capable of underwater breathing for a time. Combine the stimulant effects of Stranglekelp with the Mana-regenerative effects of Mageroyal to produce a strong regenerative tonic valued among mages.

Sungrass[]

Scientific Name :Equisetum arvense
Family: Equisetaceae

Habitat: Sungrass can be found most frequently in The Hinterlands, Feralas and Azshara. It has also been seen in Eastern Plaguelands, Un'Goro Crater, Felwood and Blasted Lands. Sungrass is most commonly found in open areas

Properties and Uses: A thin, stiff grass that grows in sunny areas; the leaves are sharp enough to leave thin, stinging cuts on the hands, so using gloves when harvesting it is recommended. It is a bright yellow-green in color, and grows in sparse clumps. Sungrass is most often used to preserve foods and potions-- its essence prevents or discourages rot for a time-- and can also be used in a poultice to prevent necrosis from setting into a wound. Fresh, tender sungrass shoots can also be eaten; they have a lemony acid tang to them. Sungrass can also be smoked, and many find the warm, citrusy smell pleasing.

Stormvine[]

Scientific Name:  Hydrocotyle
Family:  Apaiaceae

Habitat:  Stormvine can be found in Mount Hyjal, Abyssal Depths, the Shimmering Expanse and Kelp'thar Forest.

Properties and Uses:  The plant has a small leafy outgrowth at the base, kidney shaped to round. Leaf edges are scalloped. Stormvines have long creeping stems that often form dense mats on the ocean floor, and some species can be found in the coastal areas of Mount Hyjal.  The flowers appear in clusters and are rounded. The bioluminescent properties of the leaves and the stems lend the plant a surreal shimmering aspect that is particularly beautiful underwater.

The dried and powered leaves are known to possess mild diuretic, antirheumatic and dermatological properties. Traditionally it has been used for rheumatic conditions, cutaneous affections and by topical application for indolent wounds, leprous ulcers and cicatrisation after surgery.

Swiftthistle[]

Scientific Name: Ruta graveolens L.
Family: Rutaceae

Habitat:  Swiftthistle grows amongst Briarthorn and Mageroyal.

Properties and Uses: A parasitic plant that specifically infests Mageroyal and Briarthorn. As with Briarthorn, care should be taken prior to harvesting. The use of gloves is mandatory. The plant consists of long, spiny leaves, a vine stalk covered in more spines, and yellow or purple flowers with sharp spines protecting their delicate interiors. Swiftthistle is a sugary plant that can provide a short boost of energy when made into a tea. The sticky sap inside the plant's stalk can be used to soothe burns. Due to its relative difficulty in locating and harvesting, Swiftthistle is a rather valuable commodity.

Swiftthistle is also a stimulant and taken in smaller doses can improve alertness. Cold infusions of Swiftthistle can  provide a temporary energy boost  and help relieve stomach aches. Swiftthistle can also be taken to improve appetite. It is commonly drank as a tea for a morning pick-me-up, and stronger concentrations can keep one awake and alert hours longer than one might normally experience. However, strong concentrations of Swiftthistle are hard on the heart and sleep deprivation will catch up. Frequent abuse of this stimulant can be dangerous.

Twilight Jasmine[]

Scientific Name: Viola odorata L
Family: Violaceae

Habitat: Twilight Jasmine is a herb found only in  the Twilight Highlands

Properties and Uses:  Twilight jasmine matures at a height of 4 to 6 inches and grows in clearings in the Twilight Highlands. The flowers are a deep purple and are nestled within velvety elongated leaves.  The plant holds deep significance for the dwarves of the Wildhammer clan.  They view twilight jasmine as a symbol of mourning , the deep color of the flower indicative of spilt blood  but their sweet scent lending them  a peaceful connotation.

The pleasant fragrance of this flower is used in the production of perfumes and is often added to bath oils and laundering soaps. As a medicinal herb, it is most useful as a remedy for sore throat. Syrup, made of the flower petals, is good medicine for hoarseness of voice and sore-throat. The petal infusion, when mixed with almond oil, is a gentle laxative for children.

__________________________

Whiptail[]

Scientific Name: Urtica dioica L.
Family: Urticaceae

Habitat: This rare plant is found along the shores of the river that cuts through Uldum, and around several lakes on the island of Tol Barad.

Properties and Uses: Whiptail is easily recognizable by its gloomy, drooping petals, giving the flower a dehydrated appearance. Whiptail can reach, depending on the location and nutrient status, a height of three feet. The stems have stinging hairs so the plant should only be handled with gloves.  The stinging hairs can cause allergic reactions in the form of rashes and skin irritation. Leaves and stalks are arranged across opposite sides of the stem and the leaves have an elliptic shape.  Its scarcity can be in part explained by its isolation on the island of Tol Barad. However, the plant was in high demand prior to the First and Second Wars and was farmed by those who lived on the island.

Whiptail is known for its antihaemorragic and hypoglycaemic properties. It is often use to treat uterine haemorrhage, cutaneous eruptions and nervous eczema. Internal use of whiptail leaves is often prescribed as irrigation therapy for inflammatory disease of the lower urinary tract and the prevention of kidney stones. The root is used to treat difficulty in urination from benign prostatic hyperplasia.

 Wild Steelbloom
[]

Scientific Name: Tribulus terrestris L
Family:
'Zygophyllaceae

Habitat: Wild Steelbloom can be found on steep hills. It is known for being unusually difficult to reach. It grows primarily in Alterac Mountains, Arathi Highlands, Ashenvale, Badlands, The Barrens, Desolace, Duskwood, Hillsbrad Foothills, Stonetalon Mountains, Stranglethorn Vale, Thousand Needles and Wetlands.

Properties and Uses: Wild Steelbloom grows on steep hills. Care should be taken when picking it, as the petals and leaves possess sharp spines and can cause painful cuts to unprotected flesh.  Wild and domestic steelbloom have long been believed to ward against evil. It is a commonly planted at the edges of gardens in the hopes that the old superstition holds true. Wild steelbloom has anabolic properties. It acts as a muscle stimulant. It has been shown effective in athletic training and development of warriors and paladins. Wild steelbloom also  has  anti-inflammatory properties,

Interesting interaction noted when processed with Fadeleaf--there is a chemical reaction that triggers latent magical properties within the Fadeleaf, a plant with an already shady past. Magical applications of this mixture have been used to render the imbiber temporarily invisible. As always, Fadeleaf should be completely stripped of its external oil. Steelbloom enhances the stimulant properties of Swiftthistle.

Wildvine[]

Scientific Name: Ballota nigra
Family: 'Lamiaceae

Habitat: Wildvine can be found intertwined with Purple Lotus

Properties and Uses: This ropy, fibrous, creeping vine is often found symbiotically entwined around Purple Lotus. Its flowers are similar in appearance to Kingsblood, though they are smaller and sparse. Wildvine is most notable for the offensive odor released when bruised, and the plant is rejected by most grazing beasts.

The innards of the plant consist of long, thin, durable strands that may be removed, cleaned, dyed, and used in textiles, either as thread or for weaving into cloth. It is a traditional treatment for anxiety and nerves, as well as insomnia, but is unpopular with herbalists due to its particularly unpleasant taste and smell. It can also be applied externally as an astringent on oozing or irritated wounds. Wildvine is also a potent antivenom for some snake and insect bites, but its rarity limits its potential applications.

Wintersbite
[]

Scientific Name: Althaea officinalis
Family'
: '
Malvaceae

Habitat: Wintersbite is a rare plant that can only be found in the Alterac Mountains.

Properties and Uses: Easily one of the more valuable herbs due to its rarity, Wintersbite can only be found in the Alterac Mountains, specifically in the Ruins of Alterac. It is a  shrub with green stems and bright yellow flowers.  Wintersbite suffered from massive over-harvesting during the war in Northrend to the point of near extinction. Botanists are, however, looking into alternatives, including the Dragon's Teeth plant. Cooks have already produced suitable confectionary substitutes to the traditional Wintersbite Marshmallows. Preserved stores may still be readily available from select alchemical suppliers or lingering, forgotten, in pantries and root cellars.

The leaves of wintersbite can be used to treat inflammation in the digestive tract, including ulcers. It addresses the causes of dry cough and can assist with the symptoms of asthma and bronchitis. The root is used externally to minimise skin inflammation, boils, burns and wounds. Wintersbite is also a good moisturiser, and is sought after for its 'anti-aging' properties. It has a conditioning and detangling effect when applied to hair after rinsing. An extract from the wintersbite root is traditionally used in making sweet marshmallow treats.

Northrend[]

The properties of the flora found in Northrend are still being researched and new curative agents are being discovered. These plants have become more widely available as the trade routes between the frozen continent and the other regions of Azeroth are now more fluid and less dangerous. Herbalists are embracing these rare and interesting plants and including them more often in the composition of various cures and tonics.

__________________________

Adder’s tongue []

Scientific Name: Ginkgo biloba L

Family: Ginkgoaceae

Habitat: Adder's Tongue is arguably the least common herb in Northrend aside from Frost Lotus. It only grows in Sholazar Basin, though it is found in abundance there.

Properties and Uses: Adder’s tongue is a small thistle like plant. It is bright green in color and covered in small, stinging 'hairs'. They are extremely irritating and can cause swelling, blistering, and itching. The plant is named by the local Wolvar Tribe, who seem to run afoul of its effects with a rather alarming frequency. However the risks are worth it. Wear protective gloves, for you will be stung while harvesting. As this plant grows mainly in temperate or tropical environments with softer, even soggy soil, it is relatively easy to pull.

The roots are crushed, boiled, and then distilled. The decoction is then boiled down until a suitable consistency and concentration is obtained. A strong decoction is good for asthma, dry cough and all pectoral diseases.

The seeds possess anabolic and stimulant properties. One of the benefits of this particular herb over Gromsblood or Steelbloom is the significantly lower risk of serious side effects. The herb stimulates the adrenal glands resulting in a safer, albeit unsustainable boost in energy, strength, focus, and reflex. Unfortunately the effect is relatively short-lived and typically results in notable fatigue. Abuse of such potions can pose a serious health risk, but correct usage is not associated with any serious problems.

__________________________

Deadnettle[]

Scientific Name: Harpagophytum procumbens

Family: Pedaliacea

Habitat: Can be found growing amongst other Northrend herbs, specifically goldclover, Tiger Lily, and Talandra's Rose

Properties and Uses: Deadnettle has long, twisted, rough stems that grow to about an inch in diameter. It grows around, underneath, and between nearby plants. Deadnettle is named for its appearance, as it looks quite dead for most of the year. The plant is of course dormant, and briefly during the spring it is revitalized, turns green, sprouts leaves, and spreads. This nettle does not flower, instead it simply spreads out and roots amongst other plants where it is sheltered and, in turn, shelters many plants from grazing animals. Deadnettle can grow in nearly any climate, though it is found exclusively on the Northrend continent.

Deadnettle has anabolic and tonic properties. It must be debarked and the softer core boiled down and distilled. The spring leaves and tender new growth may be used in a strong infusion or decoction. Deadnettle strengthens the internal organs, particularly the adrenal glands and kidneys. A small dose taken daily provides stamina. Larger doses provide increased benefit, though perhaps of shorter, more erratic duration.

Fire Leaf []

Scientific Name: Ricinus Communis

Family: Euphorbiaceae

Habitat: Fire Leaf is found only in The Geyser Fields in the Borean Tundra and is part of a plant called firethorn.

Properties and Uses: The fire leaf is rare as it only grows in the Geyser Fields. It appears to need rather unique conditions to grow, namely smoldering dry sands and underground networks of scalding water with high concentrations of minerals. The Steam Springs themselves have medicinal properties and are frequented for therapeutic purposes, especially in the rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries or the relief of rheumatic conditions. They are especially recommended to help restore movement and flexibility in the articulations after prolonged immobility.

This colorful plant has huge green-red leaves and red stems and can grow to almost a foot in height. Potent oil is pressed from the seeds and leaves to create a powerful laxative. The relevant compound, found in the leaves and small seeds, is a water soluble agent called ricin. When ingested in their original form, leaves and seeds can induce vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea with blood. It is sometimes used in the composition of insecticides by farmers to get rid of pests on crops. The residual toxicity on the vegetables makes this a questionable practice however. __________________________

Frost Lotus []

Scientific Name: Agnus Castus

Family: Verbenaceae

Habitat: Frost Lotus is typically found growing amongst other herbs, such as Icethorn or Lichbloom. It also grows in the contested battlefield of Wintergrasp but only the bravest of herbalists dare to venture in this dangerous area of Northrend to collect this rare flower.

Properties and Uses: Believed to possess mystical powers by the giants in Duff Niffelem, the Frost Lotus is one of the most extraordinary looking plants in all of Azeroth. Its stem appears to be encased in a frozen glaze and its flower has a very large purple or blue bulbous center crowned by very fine feather-like petals. It produces nutritious little berries that may be eaten off the plant. The Sons of Hodir used the Frost Lotus for its supposed anaphrosidiac properties. They believe that consuming the leaves or the berries decreases the lustful longings of women, ensuring the legitimacy of their progeny. The Frost Lotus is used to alleviate symptoms of various gynecological problems including premenstrual syndrome, abnormal uterine bleeding disorders and mastodynia. It can also stimulate lactation in new mothers. The berries are harvested by gently rubbing the berries loose from the stem.

Goldclover[]

Scientific Name: Lanatan camara L

Family: Verbenaceae

Habitat: This attractive and delicate little yellow clover grows in clumps in open fields. It is found in the Borean Tundra, Howling Fjord, the southern part of Sholazar Basin, and the northern and western areas of Grizzly Hills. It can also be gathered in the Emerald Dragonshrine.

Properties and Uses: The foliage of the Goldclover is a golden yellow in color with trifoliate leaves. Flowers grow on stalks and are identified by their spherical, spiky shape and white color. As with other varieties of clover, it is very nutritious and the nectar very sweet. The fluid extract of Goldclover is used as an antispasmodic. An infusion may be used in cases of bronchial infections and whooping-cough. Fomentations and poultices of the herb have been used as local applications to cancerous growths.

Icethorn[]

Scientific Name: Salix Arctica

Family: Salicaceae

Habitat: This rare plant can only be found in the unforgiving snowy peaks of Icecrown and the dangerous Wintergrasp area, making its collection a risky endeavor. As such it is one the priciest herbs on the market. It can also be found, less frequently, in Zul’Drak.

Properties and Uses: A prickly little bush that grows through the thick snow cover of the frozen peaks of Icecrown, the Icethorn is often used as a metaphor for resilience and strength in the face of adversity. The leaves of the Icethorn plant are adapted to the cold weather by growing long fuzzy hairs. It blooms once a year around the time of Winter’s Veil. Its flower is a delicate bioluminescent bloom with small slim white petals that reflect the light bouncing off the snow. From a distance it appears like a shimmering icicle. Icethorn is stated to possess anti-inflammatory, analgesic and astringent properties It is prominently use to relieve tooth aches, to stop bleeding (as a poultice on wounds), and to lessen the symptoms of diarrhea and indigestion. __________________________

Lichbloom[]

Scientific Name: Passiflora incarnata L.

Family: Passifloraceae

Habitat: Lichbloom is collected from the snowy zones in Northrend such as the Storm Peaks and Icecrown.

Properties and Uses: The flower gets its recent vernacular name from a reference to the Lich King himself. The blue corona in the shape of a crown, symbolizes his bloody reign of terror, and the eight silvery petals represent the Azeroth races that fought together to defeat him and bring about his demise. Bouquets of Lichbloom are often placed on memorials to the fallen heroes who have fought and perished to deliver Azeroth from the tyranny of the monster prince.

Lichbloom is stated to possess sedative, hypnotic, and antispasmodic properties. It is used to help relieve neuralgia and acute asthma. It has demonstrated effectiveness to stop seizures as well and has shown promise in the treatment of soldiers suffering from battle trauma anxiety. Its sedative properties make it an excellent natural remedy against insomnia. __________________________

Talandra’s Rose[]

Scientific Name: Catharanthus roseus (L.)

Family: Apocynaceae

Habitat: Talandra's Rose is most commonly found in the non-snowbound areas of Zul'Drak, it grows at the base of objects such as walls and trees. Talandra’s rose can be found in Zul'Drak. It can also be found, although not in abundance, in certain areas of the Borean Tundra. Properties and Uses: The origin of the name is unknown. One can only guess at the inspiration. Tragic love perhaps? Talandra’s rose can be recognized at its bright velvety red petals. The stems of the plant are covered in small sharp thorns. It is recommended to use gloves when harvesting this, as the thorns contain a mild irritant which can cause unpleasant skin rashes. This plant is effective to treat for malaria. Extract of its roots is used as a remedy for hypertension and menstrual pain. Tea made of the flowers is said to help relieve the symptoms of cold and sore throat. The crushed leaves can be applied to scalds, burns, sores, mumps and insect bites. Flower can be decocted and used as an eyewash

__________________________

Tiger Lily[]

Scientific Name: Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L. Family: Malvaceae

Habitat: Tiger Lilly is easily spotted, being a tall plant with large red flowers. It is found throughout Northrend’s warmer regions, especially in Sholazar Basin.

Properties and Uses: The tiger lily can be easily recognized by its large crimson flower and its potent citrus fragrance. The branches are arranged spirally on the stems and flowers are borne singly on the axils of the upper leaves, usually on rather long stalks. Decoctions of dried flowers are taken orally to regulate menstruation and in high doses, to produce abortion. Hot water extracts of the flower pistil and stamens are used as contraceptive. Leaves are applied to abscesses to accelerate draining. Hot water extracts of bark, roots and flowers can be used externally in pastes and poultices as emollients. The seeds made into an emulsion with milk can be used for itch and skin rashes.

Outland[]

Plants native to Outland have fascinating and unusual properties. Many plants are bioluminescent and have potent pollen. Research is ongoing on these strange and powerful plants. The alchemical applications of these plants for the enhancement of spellcasting and other skills have so far outpaced the medicinal ones but herbalism researchers are continuously uncovering new and promising properties for curative purposes. This unique flora is not done revealing its captivating secrets.

__________________________

Ancient Lichen []

Scientific Name: Parmelia

Family: Parmeliaceae

Habitat: Ancient Lichen is a rare herb that can be found growing inside old decaying structures in Outland such as the Auchenai Crypts and the Mana Tombs. It can also be harvested from some fungal giants and treants.

Properties and Uses: This plant received its vernacular name from its resemblance to creeping lichen. It is however not a member of the lichen family. This slow growing herb is actually a fungus. Like grave moss, it can be found growing near decaying matter. Its slow growth rate is often outpaced by other microbial life and the plant is often smothered before it has a chance to develop mushrooms. This bioluminescent fungus can grow on a wide variety of surfaces where rotting organic matter can be found, including the large, lumbering fungal giants of Outland.

Ancient Lichen has soothing and analgesic properties. It has been shown to provide a temporary and significant increase in pain tolerance. It makes for a very effective pain killer and has been used in folk medicine among the Orcs and the Draenei for gastrointestinal issues, cardiovascular issues, illness, and to halt both internal and external bleeding. Caution must be exercised in long term use for pain management as it can be habit forming.

Dreaming Glory []

Scientific Name: Arnica

Family: Asteraceae

Habitat: Dreaming Glory can be found in all zones of Outland. It grows on cliff sides and usually on the top of peaks, much like Mountain Silversage or Wild Steelbloom

Properties and Uses: The soft, translucent petals of the Dreaming Glory glow with a golden luster, and its pollen shimmers like heavenly stardust. The delicate appearance of the flower is contrasted by the thick stem and the coarse fern-like leaves. Like Silversage and Steelbloom, Dreaming Glory grows primarily in highland, preferring rugged terrain where it will not be trampled. It has been said that the Dreaming Glory sheds some hope on the grim situation in Outland, as it radiates bioluminescent light and a faint warm glow. The plant induces feelings of warmth, and well-being at the touch. It has been nicknamed the “Hope Bloom” for its unusual ability to create this mild euphoria.

Dreaming Glory's beautiful, soft golden petals are put to practical use by herbalists, who use them along with the flower's pollen in anti-inflammatory and antiseptic salves. The plant's beneficial effects on the skin make it ideal to treat dermatitis, acne, and other skin irritations. Dreaming glory essential oils has become a key component in many of Azeroth's finest beauty creams. The herb also assists in reducing abdominal cramps, constipation and mild spasms. The anti-depressant properties of the plant are currently being explored by herbalists and alchemists. __________________________

Flame Cap []

Scientific Name: Silybum Marianum

Family: Asteraceae

Habitat: Flam cap is a rare plant that can be found only in the damp climate of Zangarmarsh

Properties and Uses: Flame caps, like most of the medicinal flora of Outland is bioluminescent. It grows 5 to 10 inches tall, and the flower has a somewhat conical shape. The stem is hollow and appears cottony because it is covered by small photosynthetic hairs. The shiny green leaves are oblong with spiny edges. Flame caps are usually recommended to treat disorders of the liver such as jaundice. It is also used to stimulate milk production in nursing mothers and as a bitter tonic for hemorrhoids.

Fel Lotus[]

Scientific Name:

Family:

Habitat: Lotuses in Outland have been tainted by fel corruption. They can be found growing at the base of Nightmare Vines and Netherblooms.

Properties and Uses: This flower, named for the corruption it has endured from the rampant Fel energies in Outland, is a twisted, barely-recognizable husk of its former beauty. This spiny, shriveled-looking, green flower has become parasitic. Its thorny tendrils entangle nearby flora. Denizens of Outland describe the flower as having once been beautiful and fragrant before its corruption.

Fel Lotus retains much of its traditional medicinal use. In its corrupted state, it has also gained strong anabolic properties. Traditionally, the plant has been used in poultices to quell internal inflammation in the respiratory tract. It draws blood and fluids out and to the surface, and has also been employed in the treatment of non-venomous insect and snakebites. The oil extracted from the plant may be used to relieve chronic pain.

Infused with Fel magic, this plant also acts as a strong anabolic stimulant. It encourages circulation, stimulates the adrenal glands, and clears the mind. Fel Lotus also increases one’s awareness and perception of magical energies. It is commonly used in potions that help focus and channel these energies, as well as in potions to protect the imbiber from these energies.

Felweed []

Scientific Name: Conium maculatum

Family: Apiaceae

Habitat: Felweed can be found in most regions of Outland in open areas. It is plentiful and easy to harvest. It can now be found even in the wastelands of the Hellfire Peninsula.

Properties and Uses: Felweed has been altered by the fel magic that permeated its native Outland, but has proven surprisingly resilient. With lush, green, fern-like fronds and delicate tendrils curling upward as if reaching for the sky, Felweed very much resembles its original, uncorrupted form, save that it possesses a much brighter color and a bioluminescent glow. Despite Felweed's medicinal properties, it is predominantly used today to draw out and intensify the medicinal effects of other herbs. Due to the plant's fel taint, it is simply unsafe for daily medicinal application and consumption, but when carefully dosed and monitored by a skilled alchemist or physician it may safely be taken in other concoctions. Felweed is sometimes smoked, though this is highly inadvisable.

Mana thistle[]

Scientific Name: Symphytum officinale

Family: Boraginaceae

Habitat: Mana Thistle grows in extreme and difficult to access places, usually requiring the use of a gryphon. It does grow on the ground on the Isle of Quel’thalas however.

Properties and Uses: Mana Thistle is a tall plant with bioluminescent deep blue flowers and elongated soft leaves. Its arcane magic enhancing properties are still under study for their possible addictive effects. Powerful decoctions of the flowers are often ingested in shamanic rituals to induce vision trances. There is ambivalence amongst herbalists regarding its medicinal properties and many hesitate to prescribe it for internal use as an analgesic. Its hallucinogenic properties do not appear as potent as ghost mushrooms but caution must be exercised. Mana thistle extract is commonly used as a skin treatment. The plant is thought to stimulate cell growth and repair. It can be applied topically to reduce inflammation around open wounds. The sap in the stem is also a powerful astringent.

__________________________

Netherbloom[]

Scientific Name: Echinacea

Family: Asteraceae

Habitat: Netherbloom is an odd looking plant that grows only in the chaotic realm of Netherstorm

Properties and Uses: The Netherbloom presents a rather sorrowful image. The drooping petals of its bioluminescent flower constantly seem about to fall. Its long stem bends under the weight of the single bloom. Perhaps this inoffensive appearance has evolved to attract the small insects that the plant feeds on, as the Netherbloom is carnivorous. The Netherbloom pollen is a potent stimulant when inhaled. It has been reported to improve reflexes, sharpen intellect and increase strength. Stimulating salts derived from the pollen can also be used to counteract fainting and dizziness. Netherbloom is popularly believed to stimulate the body's immune system and ward off infections. It is also used as an anti-toxin for snakebites and blood poisoning. Other uses for the plant include treatment of skin conditions such as boils, carbuncles and abscesses.

Nightmare Vine[]

Scientific Name: Helleboreus foetidus

Family: Ranunculaceae

Habitat: Nightmare Vine can be found throughout Shadowmoon Valley as well as Blade's Edge Mountains and at the Throne of Kil'jaeden in Hellfire Peninsula. It can be seen out in the open as well as tucked in between rocks. Properties and Uses: A dark looking plant with a sickly green center glow, the Nightmare Vine has an unpleasant odor reminiscent of fetid decaying matter when the leaves are bruised. It has spreading foliage and the green flowers bloom in late winter. The Nightmare Vine produces strong acidic pollen. It burns intensely on contact but the painful effects fade after a few seconds. All parts of the plant are highly poisonous and can cause burning and blistering of the mouth, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, even irregular heartbeats. It is a preferred ingredient in many insidious poisons to induce suffocation, swelling of the tongue and throat, slowing of the heart rate, and finally collapse and death from cardiac arrest. It can only be used in dried form to neutralize most of the poisonous components and in very small doses. As a remedy, dried Nightmare Vine roots are used as an emergency purging agent to provoke vomiting after the ingestion of a harmful substance.

Ragveil[]

Scientific Name: Cananga odorata

Family: Annonaceae

Habitat: Ragveil can be found in the damp marshes of Zangarmarsh and inside the Coilfang. It can also be found growing on Bog giants.

Properties and Uses: Ragveils have long slim stems. Their fragrant flowers are white and in the shape of narrow pointed caps. They appear to be glowing because of the bioluminescent properties of the pollen. The essential oil derived from the flower is used in aromatherapy. The oil distilled from the flower of this rare plant is prized in perfumery for its delicate aroma that mixes well with woodsy scents. As a blended massage oil or diluted in the bath, Ragveil will soothe aching muscles, relieve insomnia, anxiety, and stress while having a calming and aphrodisiac effect. It also helps restore moisture to dry, itchy skin.

Terocone[]

Scientific Name: Macrozamia pauli-guilielmi

Family: Zamiaceae

Habitat: Similar to pine cones in that they are seed pods and grow on the giant conifers of Terokkar Forest in Outland.

Properties and Uses: The Arakkoa tribe believe the terocone is blessed by their god, Terokk, and the plant is revered as sacred. Terocones are a bright bluish color and slightly bioluminescent. Other than color and size--for they are very large, Terocones resemble any other pine cone, a woody cone covered in thick plates or scales, each containing a nut. When the nuts mature, the cone drops to the ground.

Terocone nuts have mild stimulant and strong tonic effects. They increase alertness and can create a feeling of well-being. If consumed in large quantities, the nuts can induce a euphoric trance like state which led researchers to investigate the potential addictive properties of the nuts. They are considered a delicacy among the Arakkoa, though the nuts can be quite tough and must be cooked prior to consumption. The oil may be applied externally for treatment of chronic itch or rash.
