A episcopal legate is a personal respresentive of a Bishop to foreign nations, a realm within the church, or any other large body. Furthermore, a legate is usually sent to a government, a sovereign or to a large body of believers (such as a national church) or to take charge of a major religious effort, such as an ecumenical council, a crusade, or an inquisition. He / she is also empowered on matters regarding faith and has the authority to settle ecclesiastical matters on behalf of his appointing Bishop.
