Captain Derek Proudmoore was the eldest son of the deceased Lord Admiral Daelin Proudmoore and Katherine Proudmoore and the older brother of Lady Jaina Proudmoore. He was in command of the Pride of Tiragarde, one of the ships comprising Kul Tiras's Third Fleet, which sunk in the middle of the Great Sea and along the coast of the Wetlands in northern Khaz Modan.
He was killed in action during the Second War during a battle with the Orcish Armada by red dragons controlled by the Dragonmaw Clan that burned and destroyed the fleet, killing everyone aboard.
Derek's death would intensify his father's hatred of the Horde, and he swore an eternal oath to destroy all orcs on Azeroth.
Nearly two decades later, Derek's body would later be retrieved by the New Horde, who had sought out the wreckage of the Doomed Fleet in search of the body of Marshal M. Valentine. Having unexpectedly come across the Crown Prince's body, Nathanos Blightcaller adapted his plans in accordance with the discovery. Derek's body was used to lure out forces of the Kul Tiran Navy to Plunder Harbor while Thomas Zelling and the Speaker of the Horde infiltrated Boralus to steal the Abyssal Scepter from the corrupted Tidesages of the Stormsong Monastery. Derek's body was brought back to Dazar'alor, where Forsaken embalmers were put to work to preserve it. Following the Battle of Dazar'alor, Derek was raised from the dead on the orders of Warchief Sylvanas Windrunner.
The Warchief had planned to use Derek as a dagger to plunge within the heart of House Proudmoore, a weapon to use against Jaina and Katherine. However, High Chieftain Baine Bloodhoof and Thomas Zelling instead freed him and secretly brought him to his sister in a meeting off the coast of the ruins of Theramore. Though Jaina was furious that the Horde had raised her brother in undeath, she calmed down when she realized that his will was still his own. Though he could not return to Kul Tiras, Jaina promised to take him to someone else who could help.
